How Much Money Do You Save by Quitting Smoking? (UK Figures)

Money is rarely the deepest reason people quit, but it is the one that lands fastest. Health benefits accumulate quietly over years. Savings show up in your bank account this month.

The maths, at UK prices

Using an average of about £16 for a pack of 20 cigarettes:

  • 10 a day: about £56 a week, £243 a month, £2,920 a year.
  • 20 a day: about £112 a week, £485 a month, £5,840 a year.
  • 30 a day: about £168 a week, £728 a month, £8,760 a year.

Over five years, a 20-a-day habit runs to roughly £29,000 — more if tobacco duty rises again, which historically it does.

Other nicotine products are cheaper but far from free:

  • Vaping: typically £15–£40 a month for pods or liquid, so £180–£480 a year.
  • Nicotine pouches: roughly £5–£7 per tin; a tin every two days is around £1,000 a year.
  • Shisha: the priciest per session — a few sessions a week easily exceeds £2,000 a year.

The costs nobody adds up

The pack price is only part of it:

  • Insurance. Life and health premiums are commonly loaded significantly for smokers.
  • Time. Six ten-minute smoke breaks a day is an hour a day — around 250 hours a year.
  • Dentistry. Extra hygienist visits and whitening are a recurring, avoidable expense.
  • Resale and cleaning. Smoke residue reduces car resale value and adds cleaning costs to a tenancy.

What the savings actually buy

People stick with a quit attempt when the money has a name. Instead of "saving £485 a month", make it concrete:

  • A family holiday within six months.
  • Two years of gym membership plus decent trainers, funded within eight weeks.
  • A deposit contribution most people would otherwise take years to build.

In the Mentovia app the money-saved counter runs live from your quit date, and members consistently say it is the screen they check most in the first month.

Give the money a job on day one

Set up a standing order for your daily habit cost into a separate savings account, timed for the morning. You are not "not spending" — you are spending the same money on something you actually chose.

That single mechanical step converts an abstract benefit into a visible balance, and visible progress is what keeps a quit attempt alive past week three.

Work out your own numbers with the free Mentovia calculator — it supports pounds, riyals, dirhams and dollars, and covers cigarettes, vaping, pouches and shisha.
